{"id":3877,"date":"2016-11-15T15:21:32","date_gmt":"2016-11-15T20:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/?page_id=3877"},"modified":"2024-07-09T14:10:03","modified_gmt":"2024-07-09T18:10:03","slug":"nuclear-separations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/research\/environment\/nuclear-separations\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Separations and Measurements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIU is developing innovative solutions for separating radionuclides held in a variety of matrices to address key environmental and energy challenges.<\/p>\n<p>-BREAK-<\/p>\n<h2>Capabilities and Research Areas<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_3184\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Radiation-Laboratory-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3184\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3184\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Radiation-Laboratory-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Radiological Laboratory\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Radiation-Laboratory-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Radiation-Laboratory-2.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Radiological Laboratory<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This research focuses in three areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>separation of actinides from lanthanides in highly alkaline high-level radioactive waste;<\/li>\n<li>separation of actinides in highly acidic dissolved nuclear fuel as part of a closed cycle processing of fuel for nuclear power; and<\/li>\n<li>separation, detection and measurements of trace quantities of specific chemical species.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">In particular, FIU is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Studying fundamental chemistry of uranium, americium and technetium in soils;<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Developing new ligands for chemical separations actinides and lanthanides in highly acidic solutions for nuclear fuel reprocessing and in highly alkaline radioactive waste solutions for treatment;<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Making nuclear measurements via alpha, beta and gamma spectroscopy instruments and techniques to better understand:\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">long-term fate and transport of radionuclides in the soil and groundwater after treatment with humic acid or base injections to increase pH to precipitate stable forms of the radionuclides;<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">atmospheric transport and pollutant deposition via measurements of cosmogenic radionuclides in atmospheric aerosols and<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">transport of pollutants in the marine environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and ARC are collaborating in these research areas.
