Congratulations to Dr. Leonel (Leo) Lagos on being elected to the Executive Committee of the American Nuclear Society\u2019s Robotics and Remote Systems Division (RRSD). Dr. Lagos will serve a three year term as Executive Committee member of RRSD.<\/p>\n

Dr. Leonel Lagos<\/p><\/div>\n

Dr. Lagos is the Director of Research at Florida International University\u2019s Applied Research Center (FIU-ARC) and Principal Investigator of a $24M\/5-year Cooperative Agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and FIU in support of DOE\u2019s environmental restoration program. In 2007, Dr. Lagos built the successful DOE-FIU Science and Technology Workforce Development Program (http:\/\/fellows.fiu.edu<\/a> ). As director of this prestigious signature workforce development program, Dr. Lagos trains and mentors FIU science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students and provides them with \u201chands-on\u201d applied research, internships, professional development, and employment opportunities. Dr. Lagos received a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Florida in 1991, a master\u2019s degree in mechanical engineering, and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Florida International University (FIU) in 1996 and 2007, respectively.<\/p>\n

During his tenure at FIU-ARC, Dr. Lagos has developed environmental technologies for the treatment of radiological contaminated surfaces and disposal of nuclear waste. His research has resulted in U.S. and European patents for a Mobile Integrated Piping Decontamination and Characterization System. He has developed and implemented innovative methods for the environmental cleanup of DOE radiological contaminated facilities and conducted over 200 technology demonstrations, evaluations, and deployments at the ARC Large Scale Testing Facility, DOE sites, and commercial nuclear facilities. Dr. Lagos has developed remote systems including a remote crate size reduction tool deployed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a remote wall decontamination system, and a remote floor characterization system. In addition, Dr. Lagos and his team have collaborated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the development of a Stack Characterization System and with International Climbing Machines in the development of a remote platform for the application and remote removal of strippable coatings from radiological contaminated surfaces.<\/p>\n

Dr. Lagos is an active member of DOE\u2019s Energy Facilities Contractors Group (an advisory group supporting DOE\u2019s environmental restoration mission) and serves as a member in EFCOG\u2019s D&D and Facility Engineering Working Group. Dr. Lagos also serves as an active Program Advisory Committee (PAC) member for the Waste Management Symposia organization.<\/p>\n

Dr. Lagos is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the American Nuclear Society (ANS).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
