Global standards leader\u00a0ASTM International<\/a> launched the organization\u2019s first student chapter at Florida International University (FIU) during a virtual ceremony on Friday. The FIU chapter will include a scholarship program, project grants, awards, and research and publication opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to be launching this chapter at FIU,\u201d said Kathie Morgan, ASTM International president. \u201cConnecting with academia has always been a priority for ASTM, and now we are able to invest in a program that strengthens our relationship with students who are the future of the standards industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph Sinicrope<\/a>, FIU faculty advisor and ASTM E10.03 subcommittee chair, added, \u201cWe are honored and privileged to be the first student chapter of ASTM International. This will allow our students to help get game-changing technologies out of the lab and into the operational environment, truly adhering to our combined vision of making the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sponsored by ASTM International\u2019s nuclear technology and applications committee (E10<\/a>), chapter members will also assist in the development of relevant standard specifications, testing protocols, testing practices and participate in ASTM committee meetings and committee weeks.<\/p>\n

ASTM International Business Development Program Manager Lissy Velez and inaugural FIU Chapter President Mellissa Komninakis<\/a> also provided welcome remarks during the virtual launch.<\/p>\n

FIU, a public research university based in Miami, Florida, is classified as an R1 \u2013 very high research activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Student members of the FIU chapter represent highly recognized workforce development programs including the US Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Energy fellows.<\/p>\n
