{"id":2800,"date":"2015-07-06T15:11:11","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T15:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/?p=2800"},"modified":"2023-01-23T11:31:54","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T16:31:54","slug":"applied-research-centers-director-of-research-visits-department-of-energys-wipp-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/feature\/applied-research-centers-director-of-research-visits-department-of-energys-wipp-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Applied Research Center\u2019s Director of Research Visits Department of Energy\u2019s WIPP facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, Florida International University &#8211; Applied Research Center&#8217;s Director of Research (Dr. Leonel Lagos) visited\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/United-States-Department-of-Energy\/108163055872595\">United States Department of Energy<\/a>&#8216;s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico. <strong>WIPP<\/strong> is the world&#8217;s third <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deep_geological_repository\">deep geological repository<\/a> licensed to permanently dispose of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transuranium_element\">transuranic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radioactive_waste\">radioactive waste<\/a> for 10,000 years; this waste is left from the research and production of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_weapons\">nuclear weapons<\/a>\u00a0in the United States.\u00a0During this site visit, Dr. Lagos accompanied Associate Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management (Dr. Monica Regalbuto) from the DOE Office of Environmental Management (DOE EM).
