{"id":3004,"date":"2015-09-09T16:28:43","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T16:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/?p=3004"},"modified":"2024-07-08T14:18:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T18:18:30","slug":"arctic-expedition-led-by-fiu-professor-provides-daily-updates-from-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/kadko-expedition\/arctic-expedition-led-by-fiu-professor-provides-daily-updates-from-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Arctic expedition led by FIU professor provides daily updates from sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIU professor and associate director of the Applied Research Center David Kadko and a team of 50 other scientists departed from Dutch Harbor, Alaska, in early August for a historic expedition to\u00a0the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>Kadko is\u00a0the chief scientist of the multimillion-dollar\u00a0U.S. Arctic GEOTRACES initiative, which is part of an international effort to map the geochemistry of the Arctic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The GEOTRACES team recently\u00a0completed\u00a0a 65-day journey aboard the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy through the western Arctic Ocean, returning to Dutch Harbor on Oct. 11. During their trip to the top of the world, they collected thousands of samples from the ocean surface, the sea floor,\u00a0the atmosphere, ice, snow and sediments throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>They will then measure the amounts of various trace\u00a0elements and isotopes \u2013 which include micronutrients such as iron, zinc and cobalt that are essential\u00a0for life, and toxic contaminants such as arsenic and\u00a0copper.<\/p>\n<p>Team member Bill Schmoker, who is researching trace elements that are critical for marine life, wrote\u00a0a daily blog detailing their journey and providing updates on the team\u2019s progress. <em>FIU News<\/em> is currently producing a mini-documentary and full-length feature story on the entire Arctic journey.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the highlights from their expedition:<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three days into their cruise, the crew began the day with a fantastic sunrise over the Bering Sea.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3005\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/l1030870-500x334.jpg\" alt=\"l1030870-500x334\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/l1030870-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/l1030870-500x334-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 50 miles southwest of Lawerence Island in the Bering Sea, the Healy took up a position at a shelf station dubbed \u201cStation #2\u201d to take sampling in shallow water estimated to be around 130 feet deep.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard crew cast the conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) rosette into the sea to collect water samples against the backdrop of a sunset around midnight. The crew wrapped up the sampling around 1 a.m.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3006\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rosette-8.14.jpg\" alt=\"rosette-8.14\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rosette-8.14.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/rosette-8.14-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 19<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the cruise, the team running the GEOTRACES rosette sampling realized that their winch was having trouble smoothly operating in cold temperatures. Heating units were ordered to help the winch get the job done in the cold.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Coast Guard crew identified a few critical parts needed for the ship as they continued to head north. The solution to getting all of this on board was to have a U.S. Coast Guard C-130 cargo plane deliver them.<\/p>\n<p>The plane, based in Kodiak, Alaska, flew up to meet the ship in the North Chukchi Sea and parachuted the parts down into a waterproof cask that landed in the water and was retrieved by a one of the Healy\u2019s small boats.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3007\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/coast-guard-plane-8.19.jpg\" alt=\"coast-guard-plane-8.19\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/coast-guard-plane-8.19.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/coast-guard-plane-8.19-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 24<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the Healy crossed the 80\u00b0N latitude line, the crew of the ship was treated to the sight of a polar bear within 100 feet of the rear of the icebreaker.<\/p>\n<p>The curious bear lingered near the ship for more than half an hour as the members of the crew and research team took photos and videos of one of the Arctic\u2019s most recognizable animals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2994\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/21322870005_75b9971edb_o.jpg\" alt=\"21322870005_75b9971edb_o\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/21322870005_75b9971edb_o.jpg 750w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/21322870005_75b9971edb_o-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 31<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The crew stopped in the afternoon for a \u201cSuper Station,\u201d meaning they will stop for\u00a0approximately two full days to take more samples in waters more than 13,000 feet deep.<\/p>\n<p>As the Healy continues chugging north toward the North Pole, here is a look of the ship breaking ice at approximately 86\u00b0N latitude in the Arctic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2999\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/21322869995_8dcd58e731_o.jpg\" alt=\"21322869995_8dcd58e731_o\" width=\"500\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/21322869995_8dcd58e731_o.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/21322869995_8dcd58e731_o-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>September 1\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the second day of a three-day trip to Alaska, President Barack Obama\u00a0proposed speeding the acquisition and building of new Coast Guard icebreakers that can operate year round in the nation\u2019s polar regions. The new icebreakers would replenish an aging Coast Guard fleet and help the United States gain a foothold in a rapidly changing Arctic that has opened opportunities for the expansion of shipping, tourism, mineral exploration and fishing operations.<\/p>\n<p>A White House statement said that the \u201cgrowth of human activity in the Arctic region will require highly engaged stewardship to maintain the open seas necessary for global commerce and scientific research, allow for search-and-rescue activities, and provide for regional peace and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Healy is one of two fully functional icebreakers at the Coast Guard\u2019s disposal, down from seven during World War II.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3008\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/obama-2-9.1.15.jpg\" alt=\"obama-2-9.1.15\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/obama-2-9.1.15.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/obama-2-9.1.15-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>September 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At 7:47 a.m. local time, David Kadko informed\u00a0<em>FIU News\u00a0<\/em>that the Healy had arrived at the North Pole, marking the first time a U.S. ship arrived unaccompanied to the pole.<\/p>\n<p>In the photo below, the crew\u00a0gathers on the ice in front of the Healy to receive commendations and hears a speech by the captain congratulating them on reaching the North Pole.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3009\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02_l1070918.jpeg\" alt=\"02_l1070918\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02_l1070918.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02_l1070918-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>September 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Kadko out on the ice in the Arctic in front of the Healy. One curtain in particular amazed us with successive bright vertical streaks sweeping rapidly along the length of the feature. While green has dominated the displays, the crew out working on a beryllium pumping cast around 2 a.m. saw an eruption that included pink and purple fringes on the bottom of the brightest ribbons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3012\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/10.4.15-aurora.jpg\" alt=\"10.4.15-aurora\" width=\"500\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/10.4.15-aurora.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/10.4.15-aurora-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>October 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After an unsuccessful multicore sampling operation several days earlier, the team tried again with better results on Oct. 9, recovering samples from the sea floor on the Chukchi Shelf.
