{"id":4344,"date":"2017-11-14T15:53:33","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T20:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/?p=4344"},"modified":"2023-01-23T11:28:22","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T16:28:22","slug":"em-fiu-partnership-prepares-next-generation-cleanup-workforce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/feature\/em-fiu-partnership-prepares-next-generation-cleanup-workforce\/","title":{"rendered":"EM-FIU Partnership Prepares Next-Generation Cleanup Workforce"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_4345\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DOE-187.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4345\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4345\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DOE-187-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"EM and Florida International University officials join the DOE Fellows Class of 2017 and other guests at the recent induction ceremony.\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DOE-187-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DOE-187-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DOE-187-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EM and Florida International University officials join the DOE Fellows Class of 2017 and other guests at the recent induction ceremony.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\"><b>MIAMI\u00a0<\/b>\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energy.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DOE<\/a>\u00a0recently inducted several Florida International University (FIU) students into its fellowship program that serves as an incubator and pipeline for EM\u2019s future workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt is our hope at the Department of Energy that these STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) students will be part of the next generation of scientists and engineers that will continue DOE-EM\u2019s mission into the future,\u201d said Kurt Gerdes, director of EM\u2019s Office of Subsurface Closure, who participated in the induction ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0The ability to address EM&#8217;s scientific and research needs \u2014 ultimately aimed at meeting complex cleanup challenges \u2014 is rooted in EM\u2019s partnerships with colleges and universities, including FIU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energy.gov\/em\/office-environmental-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EM<\/a>\u00a0works to attract, train, and retain the next-generation cleanup workforce in fields such as nuclear, engineering, science, and construction \u2014 good-paying jobs supporting EM\u2019s cleanup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0Since 1995, FIU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Applied Research Center<\/a>\u00a0has supported EM\u2019s mission of accelerated risk reduction and cleanup of the legacy of the nation\u2019s nuclear weapons program. Recent work includes developing robotic platforms and tools to better detect potential leaks in high-level waste tanks underground at the Hanford Site in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cWe see the results that FIU produces in our technical areas of D&amp;D, soil and groundwater contamination, high-level waste treatment and disposal, and information technology,\u201d said Gerdes. \u201cThe outcome of FIU\u2019s research is being integrated in real world application at our facilities across the EM complex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0The DOE Fellows Class of 2017 includes\u00a0Joseph Coverston, Ryan Cruz, Katherine Delarosa, Christopher Excellent, Silvia Garcia, Alejandro Koszarycz, Manuel Losada, Ximena Lugo, Anibal Morales-Zambrana, Joshua N\u00fa\u00f1ez, and Tristan Simoes-Ponce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gdp\">\u00a0 \u00a0Since its inception in 2007, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fellows.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DOE-FIU Science and Technology Workforce Development Program<\/a>\u00a0has inducted 142 fellows who are mentored in research, development, and deployment of new cleanup technologies.
