{"id":4718,"date":"2018-08-31T13:59:16","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T17:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/?p=4718"},"modified":"2025-01-31T11:48:09","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T16:48:09","slug":"goldschmidt-meeting-highlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/news\/goldschmidt-meeting-highlight\/","title":{"rendered":"Goldschmidt Meeting Highlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_4098.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_x_x_x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/staff\/yelena-katsenovich\/\">Dr. Yelena Katsenovich<\/a> and a\u00a0post doc associate <a href=\"https:\/\/eicdev.fiu.edu\/phparc\/staff\/daria-boglaienko\/\">Dr.\u00a0Daria Boglaienko<\/a>\u00a0attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geochemsoc.org\/programs\/goldschmidtconference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Goldschmidt Conference<\/a> in Boston on August 12-17 where they presented research conducted at the Applied Research Center at Florida International University in support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Energy<\/a> Office of Environmental Management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_x_x_x_MsoNormal\">Dr. Boglaienko presented results of experiments conducted to investigate the removal efficiency of technetium-99\u00a0from the liquid phase via reductive sorption of soluble Tc(VII). This work is conducted in collaboration with Dr. Tatiana Levitskaia from PNNL. The study is developing a potential method to separate the radioactive contaminant\u00a0(<sup>99<\/sup>Tc) from off-gas condensate to be recovered from the low activity waste vitrification facility at the DOE Hanford Site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_x_x_x_MsoNormal\">Dr. Katsenovich presented an overview of the research that the\u00a0Soil and Groundwater Research\u00a0Group at ARC\u00a0is conducting\u00a0to examine the effect of aqueous chemistry on the\u00a0removal of uranium in synthetic pore water solutions as well as the impact of sediments and mineral phases.\u00a0The\u00a0Hanford Site is currently considering\u00a0injection of reactive gases such as ammonia\u00a0to decrease uranium mobility in the vadose zone via creation of alkaline pore water conditions.
